Claudia Weimer WINS SDEA Board Seat 4; Susan Legler in Run-off for CTA State Council with Lindsay Burningham

WE HAVE GREAT NEWS TONIGHT!!!

Claudia Weimer — Bayview Terrace Elementary School teacher and Breakfast Club endorsed candidate — won the election for SDEA Board Seat Four! YES!!!

Claudia is committed to making sure that our union’s decision-making process is transparent and democratic. She is also committed to protecting our contract while simultaneously fighting back any layoff threats from the District. Claudia will represent the elementary educators in the Lincoln, Mission Bay, and San Diego Clusters.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CLAUDIA!!! And congratulations to all of you who campaigned and voted on her behalf. This is a great sign for our campaign building up to this March, when six more SDEA Board seats will be up for open election. If we sweep those Board seats, we’ll hold a voting majority of the SDEA Board starting next fall when we go into bargaining our next contract.

Also, after tonight’s results, Susan Legler — teacher at ALBA — will be in a run-off for CTA State Council with SDEA Vice President Lindsay Burningham.

Neither Susan Legler nor Lindsay Burningham received a majority of the votes for the seat, and so there will be a run-off election. SDEA Board member Scott Mullin ran but received the least votes for the seat, and so will be excluded from the run-off.

Why does CTA State Council matter?

Because that is the body that votes on things like:

  • Raising our union dues. CTA continues to raise our union dues despite members state-wide taking pay cuts, not pay increases.
  • How to spend our political dues dollars. Here is just one of many possible examples of what CTA delegates might vote on: CTA spent millions of dollars more on defeating Prop. 32 than passing Prop. 30. Most SDEA members agree that Prop. 32 deserved to be defeated, but many members wondered why CTA didn’t do more to prevent local unions like us from taking up to 14 furlough days like we would have in Prop. 30 failed?

We need people like Susan Legler who will vote to make CTA more accountable to SDEA members and to teacher union members statewide.

GREAT JOB, BREAKFAST CLUB ACTIVISTS! WE HAVE A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS WEEK!
