The TA REMOVES Our Ability to Protect Our Healthcare

One of the most dishonest arguments being used by SDEA’s leadership in support of their TA is that unless we approve it, we will likely lose our healthcare in a year. SDEA leadership tells us that by extending our contract for a year we can “lock up” our health benefits. In fact, the opposite is true. Approving this TA has the effect of the union giving up all of our leverage to protect our healthcare (the ability to strike next July), while the District keeps all of their leverage to extract it from us (the ability to issue 1,500 layoffs next March). Take a look at the chart below, and then let’s vote NO on this incredibly poorly thought out TA to protect our healthcare and other important contractual protections.
