While defending his vote to layoff teachers, Kevin Beiser spoke about his own experience as a teacher in the Sweetwater Union High School District saying, “We have come together a couple of years ago and agreed to concessions to save jobs.” http://www.10news.com/news/30632164/detail.html
I live in the SUHSD boundaries, so I decided to see what my local teachers are earning after making concessions.
Yes, Sweetwater teachers do have to pay for part of their health insurance. But my “super composite rate” for me and three kids at Kaiser (with dental and vision) would only be $378 a month which means (if we freeze our salary) I’d still make about $9K more a year if I taught with Kevin. http://www.suhsd.k12.ca.us/benefits/uploads-2012/sea/SEA-RATE-CHART-2012.pdf
Wow! I’ll take those concessions any day!
Since Kevin is a math teacher, let’s all encourage him to ask his district how they manage to pay his salary scale. Maybe he can apply that formula to our budget!
