Incumbent Slate Using District Lists to Send Mailers

Members at two schools and counting have received U.S. mail at work from the incumbent slate, addressed to our full name including middle name.

By Michelle Sanchez, Garfield AR

Take a look at the postcard I got today:

Postcard

This is information that we only provided to the District, and which is accessible to the SDEA membership in only two ways:

  • Someone at SDEA, who has access to the District lists, has provided this information to the incumbent slate. This would be a use of union resources.
  • The incumbent slate has accessed PowerSchool to get member information to use for campaign mailers. This would be a use of District resources.

Either way, this is a campaign violation.  It is also a major violation of my privacy, and I am not okay with it.

SDEA Election Procedure Standing Rule Letter E5 prohibits use of District systems to campaign. Standing Rule Letter E8 states that privileges extended to one candidate shall be extended to all candidates, meaning that if SDEA provided these lists to one group of candidates and not other candidates, it is a campaign violation.

This is the second major campaign violation in our election so far, coming on the heels of SDEA President Bill Freeman campaigning out of his union office at the SDEA building (see Election Procedure Standing Rules D11, E8 and E10).

It’s like déjà vu all over again. Remember this? And this? And this? And this? And this?

SDEA members deserve a fair election.

Please continue to email evidence of campaign violations to thebreakfastclubsandiego@gmail.com so we can continue to fight for clean elections for our union.
